Sadiq Khan has dropped a few hints as to the introduction of car-free days though we do not yet know when these would be or even what they would look like. His hints come off the back of World Car-Free Day which took place in Paris on the 25th of September. On this day Paris banned cars from 400 miles of it’s streets in a bid to reduce pollution and to get it’s residents out of their homes and into the city. Paris wasn’t the only city to mark the occasion as cities across the world also banned cars from their streets on the 25th of September. We aren’t sure how successful it would be in London!

The Mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo has since supported the idea of a car free Paris albeit on a much smaller scale. She has suggested that the first Sunday of each month should see the streets around the Champs Elysees closed to all cars. Sadiq Khan has been quoted as being “supportive” of no cars on the streets of London in the near future.

This all comes in light of London’s plans to pedestrianise Oxford Street by 2020. Which will directly coincide with the launch of Crossrail.

A spokesman for Sadiq Khan is quoted as saying that “The Mayor is looking into a range of dynamic proposals on improving public spaces including traffic free days and plans for the pedestrianisation of Oxford Street”

“He is overseeing hard-hitting new measures to tackle London’s polluted air and is supportive of events like car-free days that both lower toxic car fumes and encourage pedestrians to get out and enjoy their streets more.”
