Whether you’re a fan of the snow or not, you may just fall into the latter when you learn of the harsh realities the white stuff could have on you and your car.

With the recent cold snap of ‘the Beast from the East’ covering us in a white blanket and grinding The UK a halt, it’s worth reminding yourself that the heavy snowfall may cost you a £60 fine and three penalty points on your driver’s license – if you are caught by police driving with snow still on your car (even on the roof), or an officer sees it fall onto the road from your vehicle, you could be in line for a punishment.

While many drivers know about clearing ice and snow from the windscreen, they don’t know  that they could still be penalised even if the conditions have no impact on your vision. Section 229 of the Highway code, outlines the correct guidelines for driving in adverse weather conditions: ‘Drivers must remove all snow that might fall off into the path of other road users.”

Unfortunately, the rules of snow on your car don’t end there. Should snow fall from your car onto another vehicle, you could then be charged with “driving without reasonable consideration for other road users” – this could be a fine of up to £100!

In addition, if the consequences are more severe, a driver could be charged with “careless driving” and face a sanction of between 3-9 points and a fine capped at £5,000.

Motorists can also can be fined for failing to clear frost entirely from their windscreen, as well as failure to de-icing their car properly – resulting into the void of your insurance.

Still a fan of snow? Perhaps not.
