As we steer fully into the new year of 2018, it has been revealed that Black was the most popular colour for new car buyers in the UK in 2017. Will the trend continue?

According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, more than 500,000 black cars (20.3% of new sales) were sold last year as went ‘Back to Black.’

As ‘King of Pop’ Michael Jackson once sung, it doesn’t matter if you’re Black or White – the latter colour being the most popular in the previous year of 2016. However, recent results suggest that White is no longer top of the billing overall, the colour has in fact dipped to third place with 19% of sales, with grey in second in the colour charts.

Nevertheless, White remained popular in Northern England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. While Black dominated the Southern areas of England.

While it may have not come out on top, Gold was the fastest growing 2017, with demand up 19.1%, although it remained a niche choice with just 0.2% of the market.

With this in mind, it is thought buyers tended to stick to plainer or safer colours because they had better resale values in the future. Gold’s position as the fastest-rising choice shows there are a few extroverts out there.

Picking a car colour can be one of the many exciting decisions when looking for that new car, as well as selecting from the cutting-edge safety and comfort tech available on the latest low emission vehicles. Although, if you’re following the crowd this year and opting for Britain’s most popular car, the Ford Fiesta, many drivers of the model still mostly opt for Blue.

Also in the survey, the car colour charts dicates the top ten shades:

1 – Black (20.3%)
2 – Grey (19.7%)
3 – White (19%)
4 – Blue (16%)
5 – Silver (10.0%)
6 – Red (9.9%)
7 – Green (1.1%)
8 – Orange (0.8%)
9 – Bronze (0.5%)
10 – Yellow (0.4%)
